Let’s learn some cool facts about my friends
– triggerfish & leatherjacket
families: Balistidae & Monacanthidae
These two species of fish have some cool features in common. Most have a fin on top of their head that can be locked into an upright position and a bone on the bottom of their body that can be stretched out to look a bit like a sail. 1 This comes in handy when they are little and want to wedge themselves somewhere tight to keep safe. They can also use these features as adults to look bigger and scare away larger fish that think they could be a tasty meal. Do you think looking bigger would make their predators go away?
