Swan Hill Murray Crayfish Relocation
July 5 @ 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm AEST
Help us re-release Crayfish back into the Murray River in Swan Hill!
After significant flooding in the Murray River in 2022-23 rendered the water conditions uninhabitable for Freshwater Murray Crayfish, a rescue operation was undertaken by volunteers and state government agencies to save the aquatic species. The recovery teams looked to save and relocate as many crays as possible, with the intention being to re-introduce them back into the waterway when it had been deemed safe to do so.
And now OzFish, alongside the Edward-Wakool Angling Association, the Joint Indigenous Group (JIG), Western Murray Land Improvement Group and NSW DPI Fisheries are providing the opportunity for the local community to help re-release the crays back into their original habitat in Swan Hill.
The release is a fantastic example of state government agencies, Landcare groups, recreational fishers and OzFish working together to support the future of fishing.
OzFish take comfort and assurances that our country’s leading scientists and freshwater ecologists have done their due diligence determining the correct opportunity and conditions for a reintroduction like this.
Registration is essential. We hope to see you there!
This project is in collaboration with the Edward-Wakool Angling Association, the Joint Indigenous Group (JIG), Western Murray Land Improvement Group and NSW DPI Fisheries with funding from the OzFish-Landcare NSW partnership, Australian Government through the CRC Program and BCF – Boating, Camping.
