OzFish Member Exclusive Event: Tilapia Round-Up at Saltwater Creek

February 1 @ 6:00 am - 11:00 am AEST

A young invasive Tilapia fish

Join us to remove invasive Tilapia at Saltwater Creek!

Tucked away behind theย theme parksย in Oxenford, is a tributary of Saltwater Creek, that has become home to a shocking number of invasive tilapia. These pest fish have invaded waterways throughout Queensland, damaging aquatic habitat and threatening the livelihood of our native Australian species.ย

OzFish chapter members are invited to a member-exclusive event to help reduce the numbers of this invasive pest species. Join us for a fish at Movie World and compete for a range of prizes! There are prizes for a range of categories, so check out the competition rules and categories below.ย

All members who register for the event will receive three free circle hooks, a free BBQ Lunch, and one raffle entry.ย

Numbers are strictly limited, so prompt registration is recommended.

Note: OzFish is committed to sustainable fishing practices, so all native species caught must be safely released.

Competition Rules:ย

  1. Only OzFish members who have registered may enter the competition.
  2. Only barbless hooks and circle hooks may be used.
  3. Any tilapia or other pest species caught must be brought to the designated area for weigh-in and disposal. They must not be returned to the water, under any circumstances.

Proper Fish Handling Tips:ย

  • Minimise time that fish spend out of the water.
  • Handle fish with wet hands, wet gloves, or a wet cloth.ย
  • Donโ€™t hang a fish vertically from the mouth. Weather using your hands or fish grip holding them this way can cause harm and injury to the fish. When taking photos with a fish, hold them horizontally and support their underside.ย
  • Donโ€™t hold fish through the gills or by the eyes
  • If you are unsure whether the fish you’ve caught is a pest or native species, ask one of our OzFish staff members to help identify it.

Registration is essential. We hope to see you there!
