Snowy Monaro Chapter

The Snowy region is renowned for having world-class fishing. Recreational fishing has historically been a big drawcard for tourism and is an important activity for those who live there.

Recreational fishing occurs throughout the region and is concentrated around the major lakes in the north-west including Lake Eucumbene and Lake Jindabyne and the major rivers; the Eucumbene, Snowy, Murrumbidgee and Thredbo rivers. The Snowy River region is primarily known for its trout stocking but was once a highly regarded and productive recreational Australian Bass fishery.

Unfortunately, recent years have seen the fishery decline from its former levels. The region is also home to some iconic yet threatened species of Australian native fish including the Macquarie perch, river blackfish, southern pygmy perch and stocky galaxias. Murray Cod and Golden Perch are found in the stretch of the Murrumbidgee River that runs through the region.

The chapter is focused on assisting with the restoration of fish habitat in the region, particularly with restoring degraded riparian zones.

Location

The Snowy Monaro region is located in south-eastern New South Wales, about 100km south of Canberra. The area is characterised by rolling plains and rugged mountain ranges. It includes the three major towns of Bombala, Cooma and Jindabyne and a number of smaller towns and villages. The region includes numerous state and National Parks, including the Deua, Kosciuszko, South East and Wadbilliga National Parks and numerous nature reserves, state forests and heritage conservation areas. Vast areas of the region are occupied by agricultural land, with a predominant focus on sheep and cattle farming.

The local Ngarigo people and their country covered approximately what is the Cooma Monaro Shire today, but also extended to Thredbo, Bombala and Suggan Buggan.
