Introduction

The OzFish MIA Leeton Chapter was established by a group of keen recreational fishers to restore fish habitat in the region and hold one of the longest-running 3-day fishing competitions, the Leeton Bidgee Classic Fishing Competition.

The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area was devastated by drought in the early 2000s. The competition was dwindling due to the lack of volunteers.  The locals saw an opportunity to move the fishing competition to Leeton to raise funds for fish habitat restoration efforts and revitalise the community.

In 2020, the Leeton Bidgee Classic celebrated its 21st Birthday, making it one of the longest and most prolific 3-day competitions in NSW.

Resnagging the Murrumbidgee

In a first for Leeton, and the Murrimbidgee River, volunteers from the OzFish MIA Chapter have installed new homes for native fish in the Murrumbidgee. Eight large snags installed at key sites within the Murrumbidgee river, providing vital new homes for fish.

Historically millions of snags were removed from the Murray-Darling Basin after European settlement. Now local volunteers have pulled together to reinstall the woody habitat and reinvigorate the local ecosystem and was made possible by the OzFish-Landcare NSW partnership with funding support from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts.

Leeton Bidgee Classic Fishing Competition

The Leeton Classic Fishing Competition attracts hundreds of anglers and encourages the catch and release of native species such as Murray Cod and Golden Perch over 20 kilometres of competition waters on the Murrumbidgee River at Gogeldrie Weir Park.

Each year, OzFish rallies recreational fishers near and far to get registered early and fill up their esky’s, powerup their boats and visit regional Australia to show support to local communities affected by drought and bushfires along the way.

Teaching the next generation of anglers

The MIA Leeton Chapter love bringing the spirit of fishing to the community and, in particular, to families.  It is an excellent opportunity for the district to get together and win prizes.

The Classic goes a step further and educates the next generation about the importance of catch and release fishing and fish habitat.

Clean Ups

Every year, the MIA Leeton Chapter steps up and organises a clean up in waterways that need a rejuvenation.

These are family-friendly events; everyone can grab a bag, head down along the water’s edge, and get involved.

The rubbish collected gets sorted and recorded to the Marine Debris Database, so the data collected can be mapped and stored to help with planning preventative actions into the future.
