Indented Head Chapter

Members of the OzFish Indented Head Chapter are passionate recreational fishers and many volunteers are also part of the Indented Head Boat Club.

The main aims of the OzFish Indented Head Chapter are to work together to establish healthy fish habitat, improve water quality, and assist in shellfish reef restoration projects. Members hope to involve more recreational fishers in these activities.

The Chapter is also passionate about being an inclusive community and has focused on providing opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged members of the community to enjoy fishing.

The Chapter works on the Bellarine Peninsula, in the Geelong arm of Port Phillip Bay giving members some great opportunities to fish, explore, monitor and educate the community.

Here, the Watha wurrung people are traditional custodians of the land and sea.

The Bellarine Peninsula is well known for a range of fishing experiences for all fishing levels.

The Geelong arm of Port Phillip Bay is well known for producing some excellent snapper, along with productive weed beds providing excellent whiting and calamari fishing.

Shellfish Restoration

Chapter members have supported the Nature Conservancy Australia’s shellfish reef restoration efforts.

They have participated in shellfish monitoring, taking measurement of survival and growth of oysters and mussels from the restored reef at Wilson’s Spit in the Geelong Arm.

Shellfish reefs are key fish habitat that provide fish with places to breed, feed and shelter whilst improving water quality, protecting shorelines and increasing biodiversity. Over the past 200 years, we have lost between 90-99% of shellfish reefs in Australia, it is key that we restore these essential ecosystems

BRUV Monitoring

An important aspect of shellfish reef restoration is the ongoing monitoring of the health of these reefs.

Using Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV), the Chapter is helping to monitor restored reefs along with their favourite local fishing spots to get a better understanding of the species present in these habitats.

Video data is used to monitor habitat health, biodiversity and any other aquatic habitat issues.

Up and coming

In partnership with the local Corangamite Catchment Management Authority CMA, OzFish has been successful in a number of federally funded grants through the fish habitat restoration program.

The Chapter will be rolling up their sleeves and helping out with the Corio Bay Fish Habitat Program and Port Phillip Community Shellfish Reef Project.

They’re looking forward to working with the CMA and other fishing stakeholders to achieve great outcomes for fish habitat on the Bellarine and the Bay.
