Introduction to the Chapter

Earlier in 2021, a few members of local angling clubs in the region decided to join forces to form a local OzFish chapter to improve the health of our waterways and give the fish a helping hand. Welcome to the Campaspe-Loddon Chapter.

We want to make the fishing better here and we welcome other local angler’s to join us.

We want to work alongside local groups to improve both the environment and fishing in the region.  We already know that this region is a freshwater angler’s delight – Especially if you have a good understanding of the waterways and the seasons, the native species can be caught in healthy numbers and large sizes of Murray cod, golden perch, and Macquarie perch.

The area we cover

If you are an angler who enjoys fishing on the Campaspe River, Loddon River, Coliban River, Lake Eppalock, the Upper Coliban Reservoir and Cairn Curran Reservoir, along with the Lauriston, Laanecoorie and Tullaroop Reservoirs, we need you to join us to give these spots boost.

These waterways provide us with good stocks of brown trout, rainbow trout, golden perch, silver perch, Macquarie perch, Murray cod, Murray spiny crayfish, native catfish, eels, yabbies and blackfish. In addition, the small-bodied native fish species and macroinvertebrates will also benefit from water quality and habit improvements.

We would also like to acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of these waterways include the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurong, Wathaurong and Woiworung language groups of the Kulin nation, who reside with us in this area.

Fish habitat issues we face

During the drought, people took a lot of fallen timber from the edges of our waterways.

That has now been legislated against but unfortunately for the fish, the damage has been done.  A vast amount of crucial fish habitat is no longer present in our waterways now water levels have returned, the native species and their food sources have been impacted.

Damaged and limited fish habitat has been a big concern in this region, along with the ongoing problems with waterquality, including effluent and chemical pollution, blue-green algal blooms, dry-land salinity, and erosion impacting fish in some key impoundments.

We want to work with key stakeholders to ensure the waterways can flourish, as we know this will mean the broader ecosystems of the region will be thriving.

Help us restore fish habitat in our waterways so we can continue to protect the sport we love.

What we will be working on

A foundation project for the Chapter is to enhance fish habitat at Lake Eppalock through mapping of existing habitat to help identify key locations for re-snagging efforts.

It is expected that returning snags to the lake after years of drought and timber removal will result in a healthy waterway and better habitat for food chain development and native fish species to live and feed.

Future projects also include an in-water habitat rehabilitation project for Barkers Creek Reservoir currently being developed with Bendigo & District Fly Fishers Inc. and water management authorities in the region. The Chapter also hopes to organise riparian vegetation planting and cleanups at popular fishing locations between Kyneton and Bendigo.

Plenty of project opportunities also exist at Cairn Curran Reservoir, with previous water quality studies identifying the limited aquatic and riparian vegetation at the reservoir and subsequent water turbidity.

The Chapter will be giving members in the area opportunities to participate in a range of activities including a Waterbug Blitz and are looking forward to running fishing competitions that promote sustainable fishing practices to both skilled anglers and the next generation of recreational fishers.
