Habitat wins in OzFish Goondiwindi Classic’s fifth year

The fifth annual OzFish Goondiwindi Classic has wrapped up for 2025, drawing a crowd of more than 300 fishers to the Macintyre River for a weekend of friendly competition, native fish action, and community-driven conservation.
Held from June 6–8, the catch-photo-release comp attracted 311 entries chasing a share in the $20,000 prize pool. But more than prizes, the event was about backing better habitat.
As part of the weekend, the Goondiwindi Chapter announced a $10,000 donation to support local OzFish habitat restoration — funding that will go towards revegetating the riverbanks and installing instream structure to support breeding and shelter for native fish.
The health of the Macintyre system was well and truly on display. Just under 400 Golden Perch and 36 Murray Cod were caught and released over the three days — plus 278 invasive carp were removed in the dedicated Carp Cull. It’s the kind of fishing that gives back.
The Classic has a winning formula. People come back each year for the strong fishing, community spirit, and great prizes — and because they know it supports a healthy river.

That community energy was clear all weekend. From kids catching their first native fish, to volunteers helping run weigh-ins and working the BBQ, it was a team effort. Events wrapped up with casting comps and presentations at the local bowls club, with plenty of stories shared and new friendships made.
“It’s more than just a fishing competition,” Rachel said. “It’s about showcasing the best of what Goondiwindi has to offer — strong local fisheries, good people, and a commitment to looking after what we’ve got.”
The Goondiwindi Classic has grown steadily since it began in 2021, becoming a key fundraiser and awareness driver for local habitat restoration. Previous funds raised have helped restore critical vegetation corridors along the Macintyre and improve instream habitat to support native fish populations.
The Chapter is already looking ahead to next year’s event, with several sponsors locked in for 2026.
“It’s a huge effort to run, but it’s worth it,” Rachel added. “Every year, we see more people get involved, especially families. The kids leave with a better understanding of native fish and why things like catch-and-release and habitat matter.”
“We’re proud of what we’ve built here. It’s local fishers making a difference — and having a good time doing it.”
