Gone Fishing Day Wrap Up

Congratulations to our OzFish Chapters that hosted some impressive events for National Gone Fishing Day 2017. Here is the wrap up;

OzFish Tenterfield Chapter

What a fantastic turnout for Gone Fishing Day at Tenterfield this year. Despite the cold, wet and windy conditions the locals showed up in their droves to participate in Australia’s favorite pastime…..FISHING!!! The day included activities such as knot tying, casting lessons, fish handling and identification. The fishing itself took place on Tenterfield Dam which was opened to the public especially for the event for one day only.

All kids attending received a free rod & reel combo, lures and a goodie bag supplied by the Australian Fishing Foundation and the DPI. Thanks for a great day Tenterfield, you rock!

OzFish Sunraysia Chapter

Sunraysia OzFish hosted their Catch a Carp/ Gone Fishing Day event day on the banks of the Murray River. Under a perfect sunny sky an impressive 92 fishers showed up for the fun. Over 60 prizes were given away in the carp fishing contest which included rod & reel combos, lures and other tackle. Drinks and BBQ was also supplied and everyone had a ball!

OzFish Northwest NSW Chapter

Inland Waters Holiday Park at Lake Keepit hosted an open day on Gone Fishing Day 2017. Some 340 people registered and took part in the festivities; yabbie fishing, yabbie races, casting competition, bbq, music, jumping castle and much more! 40 Shimano combos were given as prizes along with lures, hats and drink bottles. Also big thanks to OzFish Northwest NSW Chapter, Landcare, Wires, Narrabri Fish Farm, The Rural Fire Service and Lake Keepit Family Fishing Club.

OzFish Onkaparinga River Chapter

Our South Australian Chapter hosted a day of information and habitat restoration at their Gone Fishing Day event. A tent display illustrated the history of the river and the habitat loss over time.  Demonstrations were  given on how the Chapter plans to reinstate the habitat with specially constructed woody debris piles.

The main activity for the day was the installation of a whopping 180 concrete blocks at Perry’s Bend to help alleviate erosion of the river banks.  So much work went into this project and there are many who contributed towards the outcome. What a mammoth effort guys!!!
