Coldstream River riparian rehabilitation – Stage 3

Coldstream River planting day, stage 3

Strengthening a vital waterway

The OzFish Coffs Harbour and Clarence Chapters have been working to restore 1.3km of riparian fish habitat along the Coldstream River.

Now in its third year, this ongoing project continues to remove invasive weeds and plant native vegetation to stabilise banks, improve water quality, and enhance habitat for key recreational fish species, including Australian Bass and freshwater catfish.

With a growing corridor of healthy riparian vegetation, this effort is securing long-term benefits for the river and its ecosystem.

A haven for fish and waterways

Healthy riparian zones are crucial for fish populations, river bank stability, and water filtration. Years of erosion, sedimentation, and invasive weeds have disrupted these natural functions along the Coldstream River.

Thanks to several dedicated volunteers and partners, 500 native trees and shrubs have been planted this year. These have helped to reconnect vital habitats along the degraded riverbanks and improved the river’s water quality.

“This project builds on years of habitat restoration, and we’re now seeing the real benefits for the fish and the waterway,” said Alacia Cockbain, OzFish Project Officer.

“Creating a continuous stretch of native vegetation will make a huge difference in stabilising banks, filtering water, and ensuring a thriving ecosystem for native fish species like Australian Bass and freshwater catfish.”

The bigger picture

This project is made possible through Habitat Action Grants, funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts, which reinvests revenue from fishing licenses into habitat improvement projects.

Through this support, OzFish Coffs Harbour and Clarence Chapters, Friends of the Koala, Clarence Valley Council, local landholders, and volunteers have come together to drive positive change for the Coldstream River.

Hands-on conservation events like these engage the local community in long-term stewardship, ensuring that this waterway recovers and is a critical habitat for native fish species. This collective effort is securing the future of the Coldstream River, building a healthier ecosystem for fish, wildlife, and future generations.
