One million fruits and counting: Seeds for Snapper WA’s bumper season continues!

After two solid weeks of seagrass diving we have officially broken the record for most fruits collected in a season!

Update provided by Steve Pursell, Program Manager – WA

The University of Western Australia team, along with local boaters, have started seed dispersals, with over half a million Posidonia seeds already delivered to restoration sites in Cockburn Sound.

This huge achievement is thanks to our dedicated volunteers, but we are not done yet! There is still fruit to be collected, but it will soon finish ripening and detach naturally to wash up on the beach.

With a big effort this week we will be on track for a record breaking season!

The numbers as at Tuesday 19 November 2024:

Total fruit collected = 1,246,764
Total seeds dispersed = 602,000
Total hours volunteered = 1,926
Most fruits in one day = 173,880 (Wednesday 13 November offshore boat collection at Southern Flats)

The team of fruit collectors that came to Southern Flats on Wednesday 13 November certainly brought their A game! Setting the challenge of 150,000 fruit, they filled their nets with a whopping 173,880 fruits, a new record for offshore collection days.

We are expecting to finish collection dives by the end of the week, so if you haven’t made it down yet, get along soon to avoid missing out.

With so much fruit in the tanks we need lots of onshore help to prepare the seeds for dispersal. Volunteer sessions at the tanks are everyday from 1-3pm at Cockburn Power Boats.

This project was made possible thanks to a long-standing partnership with the University of Western Australia, support from Recfishwest and Cockburn Power Boats Club with major funding provided by Water Corporation, Synergy and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.
