Trialling Quilted Oyster Reefs: enhancing the Nerang River ecosystem

We are thrilled to announce the successful installation of 15 metres of Quilted Oyster Reefs (QODs) along the rock walls at The Southport School on the banks of the Nerang River. This ambitious project, supported by Queensland’s Community Fishing Grants Program, aims to enhance local biodiversity, improve water quality, and boost fish populations.

The QODs were meticulously constructed using stainless steel chicken wire and recycled oyster shells. These innovative structures were strategically placed along the rock walls to create living sea walls that seamlessly integrate with the natural environment. By leveraging recycled materials, the project not only promotes sustainability but also establishes a resilient habitat for marine life.

In just the first year, the project has already yielded remarkable ecological benefits:

Biodiversity Boost: thousands of oysters, mussels, crabs, worms, shrimp, and other animals have colonized the reefs, forming thriving mini-ecosystems. This surge in biodiversity is a testament to the effectiveness of the QODs in creating suitable habitats for various marine species.

Improved Water Quality: oysters and other filtering animals, such as sea squirts, are actively filtering the water, significantly improving the water quality in the Nerang River. This natural filtration process helps maintain a cleaner and healthier aquatic environment, benefiting both marine life and the surrounding community.

Increased Fish Life: the reefs provide essential new habitats for a variety of animals, including crabs, prawns, and worms. These creatures, in turn, serve as food sources for fish, leading to an increase in fish numbers.

We are excited about the continued growth and positive impacts of the Quilted Oyster Reefs. Ongoing monitoring and maintenance will ensure that the reefs reach their full potential as vital components of the Nerang River ecosystem. We look forward to expanding similar projects to other areas, further promoting environmental sustainability and community engagement.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Southport School, OzFish volunteers, and community members who have dedicated their time and effort to this project. Your hard work has played a crucial role in improving the health of the Nerang River ecosystem.

This project would not have been possible without the generous support of Queensland’s Community Fishing Grants Program. Their assistance has been instrumental in bringing our vision for the Quilted Oyster Reefs to life, and we are deeply appreciative of their commitment to environmental sustainability.
